Open Lecture

Open Lecture explored the relationship between sculptural expressions, architectural forms and engineering principles with reference to ancient, Renaissance and modern vaulted and domed structures.

Artist and trained architect Ken Wilder reflected on the historical roots and contemporary context of this subject and considered how the translation of engineering principles into an architectural response might inform a critical sculptural practice. This was discussed through the idea of the architectural proposition as neither a building nor a model but a sculptural experiment utilising concrete and other construction materials.

This public lecture supported the more practical learning of Both Sides Now. It contextualised the specific skills acquired through participating in the workshop and introduced the more theoretical aspects of the weekend’s endeavours to a wider audience.
