‘Are You Sitting Down?’

Screening sculpture in/as moving image
Genesis Cinema, Mile End Road, Whitechapel, London
Spiral Jetty (1970), film by Robert Smithson, Virgina Dwan and Douglas Christmas

If sculpture often takes the form of stationary objects and film features moving images, what happens when sculpture is captured in film? How is the experience reconfigured by or for this new medium? What do we gain from encountering sculpture in the unlikely context of a cinema? With these questions among those in mind, this screening featured films and videos selected by sculptors and other artists who are interested in engaging with sculpture through the medium of moving image. It also explored the reciprocal relationship(s) between these two art forms.
